Coweta County History and Overview

Photo of Coweta Cort House BuildingThe area now known as Coweta County was originally part of the Creek Indian Nation. It was included in the territory ceded to the United States government in treaty signed in 1825 by William McIntosh, head chief of the Creek nation, who was later killed by other chiefs who opposed the treaty. The county was named for the Coweta Indians, a sub-tribe of the Creek Nation.

Today Coweta County is home to over 89,000 residents and has seen a explosion is residential and commercial growth.

Newnan

Picture of Newnan, from "Singer Souvenir of the South," c. 1915City of Newnan The City of Newnan, know as the "city of homes", was first settled in 1828. Named for General Daniel Newnan, a former Secretary of State and US Congressman, Newnan's primary economic force, until the civil War, was agriculture. With a population of over 16,000 (2000 Census: 16,242), Newnan is a center of planned growth and activity for the west central Georgia region. The city has five historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Grantville

Photo of Bonnie Castle-Bed and BreakfastLocated 10 miles south of Newnan, historic Grantville is another community with its roots in agriculture and rail transportation. Most of the town has been restored and is one of the largest historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Moreland

Moreland is 6 miles south of Newnan and was originally a crossroads settlement of farm families. In 1888 the town was incorporated and named after Dr. John Moreland, a physician and stockbroker in the Atlanta and West Point Railroad Company.

City of Senoia

Senoia City Hall, located on Main Street Senoia was named in 1860 for the mother of Chief William McIntosh. The first building was erected in 1860 for a church and mercantile office. The Confederate forces used this building as a commissary for its forces. Today Senoia enjoys a growing and prosperous economy. Several movies have been filmed there and the city has even got it's own movie studio. Antique shops, furniture stores and the historic Veranda Bed & Breakfast are just some of the attractions.

Sharpsburg

Civil War Prints-SharpsburgSharpsburg was incorporated in December 1871. The town was first established as a trading post in 1825. Ten miles east of Newnan, Sharpsburg was an agricultural center until the late 1940's. Today the Sharpsburg area has seen a population growth unlike anywhere else in the county.

Situated inside Newnan Carl Miller Park. Built in 1998 by local volunteers and funded through local donations, the 32,000 square foot playground features wooden climbing areas, several swings, assorted bridges, tunnels, forts, playhouses, cars, boats, trucks and airplanes for kids to play.
